Low Fat Diets

A low-fat diet reduces the amount of fats you eat. This is done through reducing the intake of saturated fats (butter, cream cheese, etc.) You can replace them with unsaturated oils (olive oil and avocados) Low fat diets are often recommended to those who wish to lose weight quickly. This type of diet can lead to constipation and heartburn as well as indigestion. If a person doesn’t receive enough vitamins from their foods, this can lead to vitamin deficiency.

What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. Vitamins cannot come from the body so food must provide them.

Two types of vitamins exist: water-soluble vitamin and fat-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. The liver and fat soluble vitamins are stored within the liver and in fatty tissue. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified based on their biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - vital for proper nerve function, and energy production.
  • D - Essential for healthy teeth and bones.
  • E - needed for good vision and reproduction.
  • K – Required for healthy nerves & muscles.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily intake (RDA), of vitamins varies with age, gender and physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. For fetal development, pregnant women need 600 mg per day. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. For infants younger than one year, 700 micrograms are required daily. However, this number drops to 500 micrograms each day for children aged 9-12 months.

Children aged between 1-18 years require 800 micrograms of sugar per day, while overweight children need 1000 micrograms. Children who are underweight receive 1200 micrograms every day to meet their nutritional requirements.

2200 mg of vitamin A per day is required for children aged 4-8 who have been diagnosed by anemia.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Because of their higher nutrient needs, women who are pregnant or nursing need 3000 mg per day.

Adults over 70 need 1500 micrograms daily, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.

Women who are pregnant and lactating need more nutrients than the RDA. Pregnant women need 4000 micrograms per dayduring pregnancy and 2500 micrograms per day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers require 5000 micrograms daily when breast milk production is occurring.
